Martial Arts Begins and Ends with Respect

A dojo reflection on why bowing matters and how respect shapes the training environment.

What is the very first thing we do when we enter the dojo?

We take time to show a perfect bow. Why do we bow when we enter the dojo? It is a sign of respect and appreciation for what we are about to learn that day.

What do we do when we enter and exit the mats? We take time to show a perfect bow.

Why do we bow at the mats? It is a sign of respect for our training area. We are fortunate to have nice mats that are swept, mopped, and disinfected every day, mirrors on the walls to check form, and many targets to enhance our training.

Bowing in the martial arts is mainly thought of as a sign of respect and appreciation for our training partners and instructors. When we enter and exit the dojo and mat area, we should also pause to thank the people who keep our training area clean, the training equipment we have, and the dojo itself.
